Secrets of the Past

~~In dark...mysterious discovered chambers,
earliest beings figured out their aim was;
to draw – paint what they saw,
now this is what we recall;

lucid pictures evoking primitive man;
portrayal of art work our ancestors began,
busy hands no time to slumber,
tracing outlines of stag and hunter,

from mineral particles,
shells and barnacles...
working slow never fast;
diversity of an ancient past,

craft of fingers – feathers or leaves,
questions there are many to believe,
hidden secrets set in stone,
shadowed symbols left alone.

I like this Jenny!  I love caves and have been lucky enough to visit cave systems in France and Spain where it is possible to see prehistoric art.  If you get the chance google 'Alta Mira Northern Spain'. You should get to see pictures of the most breathtaking cave-art discovered - so far...

You're back! Lovely poem - and I most liked the bit about working slow and not fast. I don't know why but having been rushing around a lot maybe I just enjoyed that!

They are wonderful, and your description is lovely. But I would question their being the work of 'primitive' man,  or that man was ever primitive, and in fact these show something of early men's abilities, right from the beginning. People have often had to live in caves! Rhiannon

Jenny - this is wonderful, and your writer's block, seems well and truly unblockedsmiley.

Such an interesting subject, evocatively and effectively portrayed here.  The last two lines truly sent shivers down my spine.

Hi there Scratch,

can I first say how lucky you are to have gone into those caves,  it must truely have been an amazing experience.  I was inspired to write this poem,  after watching a programme on BBC 2 about Stone Age man.  I have googled those caves and read up all about them,  it was really interesting.

It made my day that you enjoyed reading my poem and thank you so much for letting me know.

Hi Catherine,

I certainly know what you mean about rushing around,  it took me ages to put this poem together. I agree with you,  I think we could take a leaf out of their book and relax more.

Trying so hard to sit down and think,  but there always seems to be something else that needs doing.  I certainly am looking forward to sitting down and reading some more of others work on here,  including yours.

It's always nice to know my writing is appreciated and big smiles from me. smiley

Hi Tina,

trying so desperately hard to get inspiration,  I think maybe I shouldn't try so hard,  but when I see something that interests me that's when I get enthusiastic and BBC 2's The Sacred Wonders of Britain, certainly gave me inspiration.

yeh, it's funny how our ancestors went into these dark holes in the ground and were moved to create art.
