The ills of the world
I want to cosset my babes;
Veil their eyes from all the ills
Of the world.
Each morn
We wake up to
The news of doom;
In lands close to home
Or further away
News of a crazed youth
Shouting alluhu akber;
Massacring
The innocent folks.
I feel a rush of
Vomit
In my throat.
My five year old tot
Wants to read the papers
Over my shoulder;
Pondering the meaning
Of slaughter,
Oppression, censorship,
Despotic tendencies
Of narcissistic autocrats
In lands not so far.
Away
I want to cosset my babes
Veil their eyes from
The ills of the world
Outside

I think it's a feeling a lot
I think it's a feeling a lot of us share. Explaining all this to children is the hardest thing. But sometimes I am grateful that at least I only had to explain it to mine second-hand, and they never had to experience the horrors themselves, like so many little ones all over the world.
