Rubber band

I lie for short periods in a relaxed state,
my sole need and purpose being
to surround you and hold our lives together.
In happy ignorance I live unaware
of the arrival of your mood of
indifference.
But it comes, stretching me until the
tension threatens my whole being.
As you let go, I speed to
a valley of self pity.
Then richocet to a pinnacle of resentment.
In my effort to snap back at you
I find I have slipped unknowingly once again
to the level ground
of loving you.
I hope you choose me from a cabbage rather than a newspaper. Cabbage rubber bands stretch much further, you know.
