I Thought I Heard You Calling

It was a dream of course,
a pleasant interlude;
icing on top of the cake
of a day remembering
the good times that used to be.
Suddenly all the bad times
were hard to recall, funny
I used to think they would all
get in the way of life,
yet here I am smiling at your
antics with tenderness, yes…
I did say tenderness.
Inevitably one thought
leads to another and I
wonder yet again why, why
were we destined to finish
the journey on separate paths?
You and I were singing the
same tune once. Calibrated,
mated it seemed for a lifetime.
Somewhere along our fated
route a switch was thrown and you
veered off on another track.
Our lives would never touch again;
we were lost to each other
forever, no way back.
Just on the cusp of waking
In that enigmatic space
where dreaming comes to an end
reality dawns apace
and you feel as if you’re falling,
I thought I heard you calling.
