Unexpressed Love
P K Routray
My elbow was
kissed and kissed
till it was burnished
till I blushed
till I told no further
my friend dear.
Unintended, unknowingly
touched my elbow the scarf of a girl
a rare species
co educating engineering stream
Junior, the dream and sweet heart
of my friend, roommate
and laboratory partner.
With no courage to express to other
but me being an exception
articulated through this incident,
his depth and the passion of his love.
The girl left her study in half way
fifty years back.
Friend left the mortal world prematurely
After a year or so
certainly not connected with this love
one sided, may be an infatuation
Both have been lost since fifty years
Still I ponder, and brood to day
Over incident and friends
with fond memory
cherishing and smiling at the young days.
(N.B – A true story
In India fifty years back only one or two girls from among one thousand students used to read engineering. They are not encouraged to mix with boy students. I had a class mate a brilliant student, my roommate and laboratory partner. He expressed his longing of love for the only girl student reading in our junior class. But I have failed to help thinking it as an infatuation and it was beyond my capacity. MY elbow once touched and incident was of 1968. The girl left the college half way.Later, for some reasons certainly not related to this love the friend committed suicide. This is my painful oft occuring memory for me)
