Awesome?

‘That’s awesome!’
How easily they’re awed!
(or just, not bored?)
a word to measure
surprise and pleasure?
is that the depth of awe?
Is there no more? –
a wonder inexplicable,
a height incomprehensible,
a purity astounding,
a holiness confounding,
a glory causing bending
of knee in humble awe,
and worship.
Do ‘awesome’ things today
respect, and reverence,
or
a touch of fear,
arouse, and draw,
any more?

Personally, I’d far rather people are using the word ‘awesome’ instead of some other the other ‘nasty obscenities’ I’ve had to experience; but it’s always worth looking at things from every angle, thanks for the insight into your feelings… LOVE all the open discussions about things :-) as Danny Sapani said: ‘words are powerful, trust them.’

Couldn't agree more regarding obscenities, Shannan, but I do feel we need to be careful about downgrading a good word, words can gradually lose their meaning, and I think in Britain, there is little appreciation of real awe of the real and true God, despite the concept being there in much science fiction in a sense. It is good to hear from you, and your real use of the word for the things of Jesus' wonderful love and gospel. Rhiannon

It seems everything these days is described as awesome. That music, movie, book, television series, sandwich, poem, story, article, phone and space cowboy from alpha centauri; they're all awesome.  Perhaps it is a special, magic age, or people have reverted to having limited vocabularies and mimic what they see or hear on social media.  I thin true awesomeness is something no eye has seen or ear had heard. Something that truly accentuates what it means to be a human being, or perhaps the expansive universe itself.

As you say, such peer pressure to mimic and to be excited at all times – words like 'brilliant' too.

I like your end comment about true awesomeness too, and especially would use it in 'true awe, right reverence and right fear' of God and his Jesus, - until you see him so, his mercy and love and welcome mean little! Rhiannon
