“Woke Up This Morning”
All sparse littered landmarks gone.
All sparse littered landmarks grown.
Trudging among missing standing stones.
Trudging along ‘n’ missing standing alone.
Little boys and girls must not mix.
Little boys and girls must not kick!
The main entrance I long ago climbed.
The main entrance long ago in bygone time.
A beautiful building strongly classical.
A beautiful building strongly farcical.
Misshapen fragments of broken gable.
Misshapen fragments of times-tables.
Rusty padlock, two arms of retaining beam.
Rusty padlock, two arms and retaining screams.
High double-doors emptiness lies behind.
High double-doors emptiness lies in our kind.
Past bulldozed out of sight.
Past bulldozed, yet might.
Pacing the emptiness was not enough.
Pacing the emptiness of our turf.
The site was silent.
The site was violent.
Something in the dismal remains.
Here at last a piece of my past still wanes.
Take the stand of reason alone.
Take the stand on reason shown.
How willingly we ache.
How willingly we forsake.
Where the lodestone to point to you?
Where the lodestone to point true?
Childhood dreams of destruction.
Adult dreams of construction.
“Woke up this morning”.

HI CM
HI CM
All these comments, and nobody bothered to mention what a terrific poem it is. I like the format you used - with the two similar statements telling the past and present. Great stuff. Good luck with it.

An interesting and memorable format. 'The site was silent ---The site was violent'. Very powerful.

CM, out of the 6 winning
CM, out of the 6 winning entries this is my favourite. I feel you have exemplified what good poetry should do namely to write about an experience or set of experiences in a way that the reader can imagine and feel in a shape that is recognisably poetry. Easier said than done and you have done yourself proud
