The other day

I went out the other day and
saw a woman fall
so I rushed over to pick her up
and she asked me to marry her
then I helped an old lady cross the road
she looked at me once over
and said ‘It’s so nice to meet you
I’ve forgotten where I’m going’
and then I was walking along
and I saw a fiver on the ground
so I picked it up and put it
in a charity box at a shop
the pretty assistant asked
if I wanted anything else
in a very subtle way
so I smiled and left.
Then I thought I’d go and see Mum
at the care home and then I remembered
that she was dead
that there would be no more visits.
Guilty and tight boned I felt
stuck in the car
and then a very small red bird
flew down and sat on my bonnet
it didn’t tweet or move
it just stood there like a life model
I tried to enjoy its beauty
to do as its messenger wished
but my heart was never strong enough
to rest with my soul
so my eyes went downward
to the wheel and below
to the hands that did so little
as a son.

very sad but very special poem...appreciate the starkness, makes the keynote 'my heart was never strong enough-' phrase and the ending all the more devastating...wonderful piece

You move quietly through this
You move quietly through this list of events as an observer, fascinated and mildly amused, perhaps, at the others encountered in this story that subtly and naturally leads to need and loss. After all the previous events, the last part is visually sad - without milking it - which makes it all the more poignant. I got the feeling that although there is the regret we all can expect to feel, anyone who cares that much, can't have been all that bad, and reading this as a mother, I imagine his would have known she was loved. That's what I got from reading, anyway.
