Triskadekaphobia

I am not superstitious, touch wood.
If I wished I could walk under a ladder
but I can’t see the reason why I should.
If a black cat happens to cross my path
I am not hot and bothered in the least.
There are misconceptions, it seems:
to say that a bed will bring bad dreams
if changed on a Friday is nonsensical;
I will fiercely contest the assertion that
it is bad luck to pick up a coin tails-up.
To say one shouldn’t put a hat on a bed
is a statement that I will also probe.
But when it comes to Friday the 13th
I am a resolute triskaidekaphobe.
I don’t feel fear when I break a mirror
but the mention of that fateful date
instils in me an interminable terror.
I stop functioning in a rational manner
and make sure I don’t step on a crack
on a paved sidewalk or walkway.
The conviction that I’ll make an error
will only vanish on the following day.

That word must have been a pleasure to use! A fun write this. My father in law was born on a 13th and it was a Friday, so he had a lot of fun about that! (He is 90 now!) Rhiannon (and congratulations at catching the interest of the cherry pickers!)

Hi Luigi,
Hi Luigi,
great poem. My partner was born on Friday 13th and it's his birthday's today, he considers it lucky.
I must admit I try never to walk under ladders, or put new shoes on the table. Isn't it strange how we pick up these phobias?

I had to read this a few times (and look up a few words!) to really get it. I love the fact that I can still read work on this site that tests me. The unfolding was a pleasure.
