Do not be my valentine,
the one I'd think of on this day
when other lovers smother kisses
on red cards to have their say.

Do not be the one I'd yearn for,
but no longer have - to cling to 
in the early evening chill, 
or sleep, fit snug like spoons with;
the one who'd calm me with a soft caress 
and turn me round to kiss 
my eager lips, and linger 
in the way I'd long for still.

Do not be the one my aching heart
skipped beats for when remembering
the shiny golden ring
and the broken vows regretted
some years later 
when love had turned to hate
and there was no return. 

Do not be my valentine, 
be everything to me, and here each day.
I do not need a card signed X, or flowers 
sent to let me know you love me, 
just tell me often - as you do,
and I will do the same.

I like this a lot.

It seems valentines day sucks for a lot of people. And like you suggest we need affection everyday not just one day a year. It really is just about making money for the florists and card companies.

Thanks thed - glad you liked it. I was going for romance in my own way, though. But I agree, like everything else, the occasion's gone crazy commercial. Valentine's Day used to be an opportunity for someone who didn't have a boy/girlfriend to buy a card to let someone know that 'x' had feelings for them, get them wondering who, and hopefully guess favourably. The world's gone mad - luckily, coz so am I.

'...be everything to me, and here each day.' You've summed up there what real love is in my opinion. Sometimes it's just being there all the time, not for the grand gestures but for the ups, the downs and the meh in-betweens.

Rhiannon, you are quite right - loads of my 'poems' are horrible, or about nasty stuff, and You haven't upset me in the slightest - just made me think, that's all. You could never upset me, I know anything you say would only be meant kindly.
