we make our faces look

plastic like dolls we had

as children, un aging

if we can afford to

pay in plastic. Package

fruit so it won't go black

as air around an oil well stops

growing lungs, while we drink

from bottles dropped like rain

into the sea, drowning

fish and downing gulls but

we turn away, too busy

making time pass quickly

till Nature's laws can't bend

anymore because Life's

not plastic, we will break

I liked your reference to seeking unaging, doll-like, plastic faces. I was puzzled at first about the air around the oil wells, but I suppose there is pollution associated, like by power stations?

Like so many things and inventions, the benefits of something used in moderation are spoilt by unnecessary or unwise use or bad use, and undermine any benefits.The first plastics were fragile and thought of as 'cheap, imitation' but when stronger plastics were made, they were lasting and seemed to have some good uses, but have become so widespread and 'single use'.  Rhiannon

Thankyou Rhiannon. I wondered if that oil well bit was right, too. It's because plastic is made from oil, and the smoke goes into the sky like clouds and then we rain plastic on the Earth? The frustrating thing is just when people are starting to realise how dangerous it all is, President Trump wants to develop new uses for plastic so America can increase production! I agree it would not be such a problem if only use when necessary, and then recycled. Hopefully now David Attenborough has focussed world attention clever people will work out what to do!

I'm not sure whether there is smoke associated with oil production, though I suppose some when used as a fuel. What I remember more is the smoke when the wells were set alight deliberately in the Kuwait war, and I think by Isis more recently.

I thought linking the idea of paying by plastic to wanting to live by plastic was interesting! Rhiannon

it's a HUGE  subject. Was wondering about writing a blog post about it. But am worried it will sound very ignorant. If there was no plastic to wrap ready meals, women would not have time to cook after work, so perhaps they wouldn't have been able to have full time jobs? So perhaps has contributed to equality. But there'd be no junk food as no way of keeping things crispy. Fresh produce would not be able to be sent from far off countries so we'd have to eat what was produced here. THEY  would eat what they had produced so perhaps their people would eat better.  White goods etc would be made to last so would be more expensive so there'd be less choice. Less choice altogether. Less freedom. But we have not used the freedom well.

Interesting piece, poignant pick of the day. It's far too little far too late isn't it. Piddly carrier bag charges, just ban them outright, paper can be carbon neural if the trees are replanted. I'm no expert on this subject but it really bothers me. I simply don't understand why manufacturers are allowed to use so much unnecessary plastic or why so much ends up in the sea. It's a global emergency.

Thankyou for your comment Jane. I remember when we were on holiday 45 ish years ago and  having a snack while out on a walk up a (probably very small hill) mountain. And my Dad carefully folded up our crisp bags and tucked them under a stone. I asked him about this as knew not to be a 'litter lout' and he said it was OK as the world was very big and it was only a tiny bit of rubbish and no one would ever see it under the stone, and if they did it would be exciting for them because it would be archeology like me looking for arrowheads.

And now there are rivers and harbours all over the world where you can't see the water,

From what I can understand the best start is to tax single use plastic, which should lessen the packaging at least.

I was cheered up today as the peanut butter I get from the co op has suddenly appeared in a glass jar! Though the lid is still plastic
