Uncertainty scares people

what are we meant to do?

Live our lives in safety

or follow our own rule?

 

Some think mask will save us

while others have puzzled minds,

once masters of our own destiny

now young dreams are left behind,

 

wrap ourselves in cotton wool

hoping for a safety net, I suppose

when all is said and done, better

to be safe than sorry. Yet!

 

When science tells us fears

lock us down for a reason,

invisible affliction of virus

will go on longer than a season,

 

maybe this time next year

protection will be found,

or will we carry on blindly

confused and overwhelmed?

 

Everything in life has

beginning and an end,

like tide keeps turning

on this you can depend,

 

mixed emotions washing over me

in silence of this long hot night,

just wish for health and happiness

to all in our unknown future plight.

So many people will agree with every line of this poem! The night before last we watched lightning coming towards us, but the storm never broke and it is still humid. I keep thinking the worry must break soon, someone will find a way out. Our thoughts are so heavy with worry, and like in the humidity no one can make plans or even sleep.

As with all your wonderful poems, this one is full of empathy and kindness and hope and I am so glad I read it

It does all emphasise to us the uncertainties of this life, from which we've shielded our minds for so long. We do each have to make our own decisions, and not be foolish or rash,

but with a trust not in our own wisdom, nor the best efforts of politicians and scientists to weigh up and advise, but ultimately in a caring God, who can help in the here and now, and has the keys to offer and hold of eternal life afterwards. Rhiannon

Thank goodness for the rain and thunderclouds today, such a relief after the humidity. Yes, lots of ongoing uncertainty at the moment, you are quite right about that. Rachel :)

Hello Di,

your words are very touching. I've been feeling so ill in all this heat, as I'm sure a lot of others have too.

I started writing this poem at about 3am on a Saturday morning, after waking up lying in a puddle of sweat, and not being able to get back to sleep. After reading the I P, I just couldn't resist taking pen to paper and writing about lock down. I can't say it was fun to write, but it did take my mind off the heat for some hours.

I'm glad you found it full of empathy and kindness, because that's what I would have wished it to portray.

Hi Rhiannon,

I agree that we do have to make our own decisions. I'm just glad I'm now retired and don't have to worry about going back to work, or worry about when to send a child back to school. Sleep is the only thing on my mind and trying to keep cool, although Saturday was so much better and I managed to walk around the garden and enjoy the cooling breezes which did help.

Writing certainly does take my mind off the heat. Hopefully now the rains are here, the weather will continue to get cooler and I can get back to some kind of normality.

Hi Rachel,

as you say, thank goodness for the rain. We never did get those thunderstorms they forecasted, but the tempature is certainly a lot better. The older I get the harder it is to cope with the extreme heat, so I'm glad I've got my writing to take my mind off those hot days. Hope you are well and managing to keep cooler.

Such thoughtful words, Jenny, sums up a lot of what I've been thinking.  I feel so much for the young people, with so much uncertainty ahead of them.  The times may be less dangerous for them physically, but I think it's going to be so difficult for them in the years to come.

hard times for the young indeed. I keep thinking of my partners grandchildren and wondering how they see their future. Luckily the eldest girl who is 22 is with a lovely man who looks after her.

Hello Di,

you are such a kind lady and your caring words mean so much. 

I'm feeling a lot better now it's cooled down. Just hope the strong humid conditions don't come back. I suspect it's wishful thinking though,  as we're still at the beginning of summer, but I'll hope for breezes along with sunshine, then I'll be happy.
