Barefoot Streets

Between touch of an autumn pavement
And the skin of my heel
There is nylon, almost black
Or so says the packet
I predicted a night of ladders
For you a bottle of wine
For me a migraine, the familiar ache
Pollution shines us a way to that other place
Snapshots of semi lit nights and the
Blank spheres of teenage faces
Alcohol paints cheeks with pink roses
But here is my mirrored smile, your uncertain grin
You couldn't really call it dancing
The swirling thoughts of my eyes
I'll scan the faces of anyone but you,
Artificial with nerves, stiff with the promise of change
You confessed, that night, too pregnant with expectation
A pair of lips and sorrow shining eyes
As you climb your way out of my darkness and into your own
Away from my arm grasping his, stone under our feet
