When the wily fox of winter
Leaves his tracks across your way,
Does he realise it's Christmas,
Or is just another day?
All safe beside our fires
With food enough to eat,
He walks a lonely hedgerow,
Through wind, and snow, and sleet.
Hounded by the huntsman
And the farmer with his gun,
All alone at Christmas,
Forever on the run.
When the wily fox of winter
Leaves his tracks across your way,
Cold and hunger stalk him,
It is just another day.

I love It Tarquin 1. A
I love It Tarquin 1. A super rhyme and metre, not one forced section - and that's not easy. It starts with the first stanza posing a question and the last stanza provides an answer. Concise, observant, well constructed and just plain old simple good. I hope that it gets picked, in my opinion it is thoroughly deserving of it. Do more like this and keep me happy.

We have two foxes who live in the bush in our drive. We put food out for them particularly when there is snow on the ground and love them for what they are, wild animals sharing our space. Lovely poem

Have to echo the sentiments above, tarquin - this is wonderful. And as scratch says - metre perfection! Very much enjoyed :)
