I lie next to you -
Watch your chest rise and fall
in a slumber of one who'll sleep
beyond the call of dawn.
 
I Long to stroke your soft hair.
Mahogany, speckled silver,
tipped copper, shorn shorter
than the pretty curls I'm used to.
 
I don't want to disturb you,
make you wake to feel
that the pain remains still,
despite all prayerful appeal.
 
I lie next to you -
to soak up the essence of you,
to listen to the sound of your breath.
There's nothing else left for me to do.
 
Just lie next to you.
