When Daddy Comes Home

I never met him,
nor did I know his name,
yet his absence
was deeply felt
by his friends and family.
When daddy comes home..,
my cousins would say,
but they didn’t know
what my aunt knew.
The telegram had read:
missing in action;
presumed dead.

My grandmother received just
My grandmother received just such a telegram, and my grandfather, missing at sea, was always a presence in my dad's life and therefore in mine. Very moving poem.
