When Daddy Comes Home

I never met him,
nor did I know his name,
yet his absence
was deeply felt
by his friends and family.
 
When daddy comes home..,
my cousins would say,
but they didn’t know
what my aunt knew.
The telegram had read:
 
missing in action;
presumed dead.

You are right, Elsie. The word’s meaning is so vague that it almost amounts to a euphemism.
Because of this uncertainty closure cannot be achieved. Such a shame.

My grandmother received just such a telegram, and my grandfather, missing at sea, was always a presence in my dad's life and therefore in mine.  Very moving poem.

I do sympathise Jane. Many mothers and wives received such a heartbreaking telegram during various conflicts which brought lasting devastation to people's life.
