A legend says that William wrote
“I wandered lonely as a cow”
but that didn’t get Dorothy’s vote.
I wonder whether they had a row.

Did they argue throughout the night,
and did her voice grow very loud
until her brother got the verse right?
The noun changed from cow to cloud.

A wrong word would be precarious.
From what I have read and also heard
cows aren’t lonely, they are gregarious:
they are quite happy in a large herd.

But maybe the legend is utter nonsense
and he never used the rogue expression,
so the readers should note its absence
and accept the poem without a question.

One can always find the funny side in everything, whether it was meant to be jocular or otherwise, Elsie. I must admit I was sceptical when I read that alleged episode but it offered the perfect opportunity to be turned into a humorous piece. Glad you find it entertaining.

Very clever fun, Luigi. I thought the legend was your own concoction, til I read your comment above. I liked your use of 'precarious' and 'gregarious'.

No concotion of mine Rhiannon. I have read this speculation in various publications not least The Guardian which in article entitled 'The ruthless side of William Wordsworth' quoted:

"à propos, has anyone else heard the story that Wordsworth originally wrote: 'I wandered lonely as a cow...'
but Dorothy told him: 'William, you can't put that'? It rings true of the 'stuffed owl' author."

As I said, it inspired me to write this ditty. Pleased it is to your liking.
