Not pretentious at all, at least not in my opinion.

It's worth editing though.  there are a few typos that draw unwanted attention.  I thought that you were going to involve the narrator in some level of culpability towards the end.  Maybe...

I've always liked these hard-boiled soviet era thrillers that you do so well ed.  This one as usual did not dissapoint.  Great story telling - impossible not to read in fact.  Love this.
